This is why general contractors should be vigilant in checking payroll records of all workers on the project.

Although you shouldn’t have to pay in full before work begins, knowing what the total cost will be is important for budgeting purposes. While each project is different, you can expect to pay around $200 per square foot for a renovation.

In general, the cost of hiring a general contractor should be less than 20% of the total construction costs. Some general contractors charge an hourly rate while others add a flat fee to the overall cost. In addition, most general contractors charge a standard markup on materials. They must also pay general liability and workers’ compensation insurances, taxes, and employee salaries.
